EXCELLENCE: The Required Watchword
EXCELLENCE: The Required Watchword.
Why Excellence is a thing.
“Excellence is pursuing and doing the best we can with the gifts and abilities God has given us” -Anonymous
September has got almost everybody I interacted with talk about this singular topic EXCELLENCE and it being a required watchword in our every day life. It goes beyond the quick in tick tick says the clock, you have to do it well.
Giving our best to what we have decided to stay committed to should be non negotiable. If you have chosen to stay committed to your growth, your relationship, your finances, and every other area of your life, then be excellent at it. Let excellence reflect on all of your commitments.
The foundation of excellence starts from the mind. It is an attitude of the mind that allows you think about things differently in a positive light with the understanding that what you produce is, to a large extent, is a reflection of you.
“Excellence is not a skill. It is an attitude” Ralph Marston
As we amplify the voice of excellence, It is also also clear that some people aren’t used to an environment where excellence is expected, and that is why they are satisfied with doing the minimum required to get by. These ones are predominantly of the team “I cannot come and kill myself” “Na only you waka come?” and all of those sleek slangs (…and this is not to throw shades at anybody).
Now, let’s consider excellence in a few areas of our lives.
“Excellence is the unlimited ability to improve the quality of what you have to offer” – Rick Pitino
For you as an individual, excellence should be your watchword. It is not you trying to compete with another person, it is your recent self competing against your former self. Each day, you should ask yourself what you can do to make the day better than the previous one. It is you seeking for ways to be better. This is a must-have attitude because excellence is an attitude. It is the right mindset towards life.
Excellence in the workplace
I heard a story of a lady who was working in a bank and she told her colleague that she could never stress herself for the bank because they were out to use her. She said she was going to conserve her energy for when she would start her own business at a later time after she must have left the bank. End of story.
If we carried out further research on this lady, I’m not sure she knew when she was going to leave the bank. Or even if she left, I don’t think she was going to put in as much effort. She is not the only one with this mindset too. There are many other people thinking the same way this lady thought.
I’m aware that not everybody loves the job that they currently do, and it is a statement of fact. This is regardless of how great the job may look. Like the popular adage says “one man’s meat is another man’s poison.”
Even when it’s not your thing
I have heard of people who went ahead to study Medicine and Surgery because that was the course their parents wanted them to do. They went to school and got the degree and afterwards went to pursue what they loved, Accounting and Finance. This is one example in the sea of others. So, what happens when you find yourself in such a place where you’re doing what you do not currently enjoy? or you’re not being paid as much as you want? What do you do?
There’s this quote from my favorite book in the whole world, and it says:
“Whatever you do, do well. For when you go to the grave, there would be no work or planning or knowledge or wisdom.”
This means that whatever your hands find to do, do it well. Even when there’s a plan B in the works, do plan A well. This is clearly an excellent mindset. It may not be easy-peasy but you’ve got to take it like it’s your business and DO THE WORK WELL. You see, excellence has a voice and it speaks. Its voice is so loud that it speaks for you even when you’re not in the room. It opens door of better opportunities for you.
You really do not have to be the founder/CEO before excellence is delivered. Actually, we will not all be CEOs/Founders and there’s no crime in that. Whichever role you’re currently holding in that organization, I dare you to put in your very best. Act like you own it, and produce excellence on that job because: “unless you’re faithful in small matters, you won’t be faithful in large ones. If you cheat even a little, you won’t be honest with greater responsibilities.”
Excellence by design
God has called us to live a life of excellence because He is an excellent God. We see it in the way He gave Noah details and description as to how the Ark should be built and also for other people too. Here is what He says about you:
You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
Dear Lights, shine and so bright! It is the Father’s pleasure. We work as unto God. Our works should also be a part of our worship to God.
Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.
Dear you, embrace excellence and be consistent at it and overtime, you’ll reap its fruit in bountiful folds.
